*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Royal Sovereign, Gilt and Enamel Sweetheart Brooch*

A fine WWII-era Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Royal Sovereign. The brooch is crafted in gilt metal with enamel detail, measuring 5.2cm x 1.7cm. At its centre is the ship’s crest: a kings crown with a lion above, with the name scroll “H.M.S. ROYAL SOVEREIGN” in dark blue enamel. The crest is mounted on a horizontal bar brooch with a simple pin clasp to reverse. These brooches were worn by the wives, sweethearts, and family members of serving sailors, a tangible symbol of pride and connection during wartime.

Historical Note:
HMS Royal Sovereign was a Revenge-class battleship, launched in 1915 and commissioned into the Royal Navy during the First World War. She saw extensive service during the Second World War, operating in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In 1944 she was transferred to the Soviet Navy under the Lend-Lease agreement, where she was renamed Arkhangelsk, playing a key role in convoy protection. She was returned to Britain in 1949 and scrapped shortly afterwards. Sweetheart brooches such as this were particularly popular during both World Wars, often given as gifts by sailors to their loved ones at home.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish with some rubbing and surface wear from handling. The enamel remains largely intact, with only very light wear to detail. The reverse shows oxidation and patina, typical of age. The pin clasp is present and functional. Overall, a well-preserved example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
