*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Dundee, Gilt and Enamel Sweetheart Brooch*
Scarce WWII Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Dundee, lost in 1940 to U-boat action – a poignant naval memento.
A fine gilt and enamel sweetheart brooch for HMS Dundee, measuring 5.6cm x 2.5cm. The brooch features the ship’s crest in gilt with blue enamel background, displaying the heraldic lion and thistle motif. The crest is surmounted by a naval crown, with “HMS Dundee” picked out in white enamel below. The badge is mounted on a bar brooch fitting.
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches were popular keepsakes during both World Wars, given by servicemen to their wives, fiancées, or family members as a token of affection and service. HMS Dundee was a Town-class sloop launched in 1932. She saw extensive service on Atlantic convoy escort duty during the Second World War. On 15 September 1940, while escorting Convoy OB-216, HMS Dundee was torpedoed and sunk by U-48 off Northern Ireland, with the loss of 12 officers and 156 men. Survivors were rescued by nearby vessels. Sweetheart brooches to HMS Dundee are therefore poignant mementoes of a ship lost in wartime service.
*Condition* The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish and strong enamel colour. Some light age wear and toning are visible, particularly to the reverse, consistent with age and handling. The pin fitting remains intact and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
