*British, WWII, Royal Naval Transport Service, Enamel & Gilt Badge*

A gilt and enamel badge of the Royal Naval Transport Service, measuring 3 cm x 3 cm. The badge is surmounted by a King’s Crown in red enamel, above a gilt laurel wreath surrounding a blue enamel circlet inscribed “R.N. TRANSPORT”. The centre depicts a black enamel field with a gilt fouled anchor, the traditional emblem of naval authority. The reverse is plain gilt brass with its original pin-back fixing intact.

Historical Note:
The Royal Naval Transport Service played an important supporting role in both World Wars, managing the movement of men, equipment, and supplies by sea. Unlike the front-line fleet, these were auxiliary operations, often staffed by reservists and civilian crews under Admiralty control. Their work was essential to keeping supply lines open and maintaining the logistical backbone of the war effort.

The crown design is the Tudor (King’s) Crown, used from 1902 until 1952, placing this example to the WWII period under King George VI. Badges such as this were worn as lapel or cap insignia by transport service staff to denote their naval attachment.

*Condition*
The badge retains good gilt finish and vibrant enamel colours, with some age-related wear and minor losses to the enamel (particularly to the black central field). The reverse shows patination and light verdigris consistent with age. Original pin-back fixing remains in place and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
