*British, WWII, RAF Sweetheart Brooch, Pilot’s Wings, Enamelled*

A WWII Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch in the form of gilt and enamel pilot’s wings, measuring 6 cm wide by 2 cm tall. The centre displays the letters RAF in blue enamel within a laurel wreath, surmounted by the King’s Crown picked out in red enamel, with outstretched gilt wings to either side. The reverse is fitted with a simple pin-back fastening.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were widely produced during both World Wars, gifted by servicemen to wives, fiancées, and family members as symbols of pride and affection. This example takes the form of the coveted RAF pilot’s brevet, worn on the uniform of trained pilots. The King’s Crown firmly dates the piece to the reign of George VI, making it a WWII period item (1939–45). Enamelled gilt examples such as this were popular, being both decorative and affordable, and remain highly collectable today.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish, with the blue and red enamels still vibrant though showing minor wear. The reverse exhibits oxidation and surface patina consistent with age. The pin and clasp remain intact and functional. Overall, a well-preserved wartime sweetheart brooch. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
