A charming WWII period Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, gilt and enamel, measuring 4.2 cm wide by 2.5 cm tall. The brooch depicts the RAF eagle in flight set within laurel sprays, surmounted by the red enamelled King’s Crown, with a dark blue enamel scroll below reading “ROYAL AIR FORCE.” The piece is mounted on a bar brooch fitting with long pin and clasp to reverse.
Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were treasured tokens exchanged between RAF servicemen and their loved ones during WWII. Worn proudly on lapels or dresses, they symbolised the service and sacrifice of family members serving in the Royal Air Force. The inclusion of the King’s Crown dates this example to the reign of George VI (1936–1952), firmly placing it in the wartime or immediate post-war period. These enamelled gilt examples were popular and widely produced, yet each retains strong sentimental and historical significance.
*Condition*
The brooch remains in good condition. Much of the original gilding is present with areas of wear. The lettering remains clear and bright. The reverse shows natural patination and oxidation from age.
