A fine and scarce original Royal Air Force Navigator’s sweetheart brooch, dating to the Second World War. The brooch is crafted in sterling silver, the reverse stamped STERLING SILVER, and is set with enamel detail. The design mirrors the official RAF Navigator’s brevet, displaying a single outstretched wing with a central laurel wreath picked out in reddish-brown enamel, enclosing a pale blue enamelled ‘N’. The brooch is fitted with its original period pin and clasp fastening to the reverse.
Measurements: 5.2 cm wide by 1.5 cm tall.
Historical Note: The RAF introduced the Navigator’s brevet in 1942, as specialist flying roles were increasingly distinguished from the pilot’s wing. Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased items, given by airmen to their wives, fiancées, or family members as keepsakes and symbols of pride. Enamelled sterling silver examples such as this one were produced in Britain during the war years, often by jewellers in Birmingham and London, and remain highly collectible due to their quality and direct wartime association.
*Condition* The brooch remains in good condition, with some age-related tarnish and light surface wear consistent with age and use. Enamel detail to the wreath and central ‘N’ remains intact with minor wear visible under magnification. The reverse retains a clear STERLING SILVER stamp, with some patination and oxidation around the hinge and clasp. The fastening mechanism appears complete but should be handled with care due to age.
