*British, WWII, RAF Bomb Aimer’s Brevet Wing, Sweetheart Brooch, Sterling Silver & Enamel*

A fine and scarce original Second World War ‘Royal Air Force Bomb Aimer’s sweetheart brooch’, die-struck in silvered metal, the wing well-feathered and terminating in a laurel wreath enclosing a pale blue enamelled “B”. The reverse fitted with an early pin and catch fastening, Sterling Silver imprint just visible. Dimensions: 5.2cm wide by 1.5cm tall.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased keepsakes, given by RAF servicemen to loved ones on the home front. This example represents the brevet badge worn by qualified Bomb Aimers, a specialist aircrew trade formally introduced in December 1939 when the role of Observer was divided into distinct categories. The half-wing brevet with “B” replaced the older Observer’s “O” insignia and was worn on the left breast of RAF service tunics. Sweetheart versions, such as this brooch, were produced by jewellers in Britain and the Commonwealth, often in silver and enamel, and remain prized mementoes of wartime service and sacrifice.

*Condition*
The brooch displays surface wear and patination consistent with age. The enamel “B” remains intact and vibrant, with minor rubbing. The pin and catch are present and functional. Reverse shows spotting and oxidation from storage, typical for period silvered pieces, the Sterling Silver imprint is just visible. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
