*British, WWII, 1st Pattern Fairbairn–Sykes Fighting Knife & Sheath, Superb Example with Original Newey Patent Fittings – Rare Early Production*
An exceptional example of the rare First Pattern Fairbairn–Sykes (F-S) Fighting Knife, complete with its correct original leather sheath. Measuring approximately 30.2 cm overall with a 17 cm double-edged spear-point blade and 5.1 cm crossguard, this piece remains in outstanding condition – one of the finest examples we have encountered.
The blade retains its crisp profile, with minimal signs of service wear, and bears the classic etched “THE F-S FIGHTING KNIFE” panel. The distinctive slender nickel-plated brass grip features the early hand-cut chequering pattern, showing only light, honest age-related patina. The oval “S” crossguard is true to profile with no distortion.
The original First Pattern sheath is complete with its nickel-plated chape and securing strap. The press studs are correctly marked: Newey Pat 201430-22 on one button, and Newey B’Ham Ltd on the opposing button — a hallmark feature of authentic early sheaths.
Historical Note: The First Pattern Fairbairn–Sykes Fighting Knife was introduced in late 1940 and produced until August 1941, intended for issue to British Commandos, Special Operations Executive (SOE) operatives, and the early Special Air Service (SAS). Designed by William E. Fairbairn and Eric A. Sykes, both veterans of the Shanghai Municipal Police, the dagger was optimised for close combat and silent killing, refined in collaboration with the Wilkinson Sword Company.
Early production began in November 1940, with blades hand-forged, hand-ground, and individually polished. The slender 1st Pattern profile, square ricasso with etched logo, nickel-plated “S” guard, and lathe-turned chequered grip mark this version as the purest form of the F-S design. Each knife was assembled by hand, the top nut peened over the tang to secure the grip.
Only around 7,000 First Patterns were made before the introduction of the more robust Second Pattern in August 1941. Surviving examples are rare, with estimates suggesting that perhaps 7% remain today. Complete examples with their original Newey-fitted sheaths are rarer still, placing this piece among the most desirable WWII fighting knives in the collecting field.
*Condition* Superb example. Blade retains full profile with clear etched legend. Nickel-plated grip in excellent condition with only light wear to high points. Crossguard and pommel clean and tight. Sheath complete, leather supple with minor age-related wear, retaining original fastening strap, nickel-plated chape, and correct Newey Patent press studs. This is one of the best-preserved First Pattern F-S knives we have handled. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
