*British, WWI–WWII, Royal Navy “W” Class Ship, Gilt & Enamel Sweetheart Brooch with Maritime Crown*

A fine gilt and enamel Royal Navy sweetheart brooch, measuring 4.8 cm by 2.2 cm, featuring a blue enamel “W” surmounted by a gilt Naval (maritime) crown. The brooch is fitted with its original pin and clasp to the reverse. Likely produced during the First or Second World War, it would have been worn by the loved ones of sailors serving aboard one of His Majesty’s ships beginning with the letter W.

Historical Note:
The maritime crown, composed of alternating sterns and sails of ships, is a heraldic emblem traditionally associated with the Royal Navy. During both World Wars, sweetheart brooches were popular keepsakes, symbolising pride and support for family members serving at sea. The bold enamel “W” suggests a connection to a Royal Navy vessel beginning with that initial — possibly one of the W-class destroyers such as HMS Walker, HMS Walpole, HMS Westminster, HMS Witherington, HMS Wolverine, or HMS Wren. Without further inscription, the exact ship cannot be confirmed, but the design clearly reflects the strong naval identity of these wartime souvenirs.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilding with wear to high points and traces of verdigris to the reverse. Enamel remains bright, though with losses to edges (particularly the right arm of the W) consistent with age and use. Original pin fitting intact, though pin is truncated. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
