*British, WWI, Royal Navy Sweetheart Brooch, Silver & Enamel, King’s Crown*
A charming Royal Navy sweetheart brooch in silver and enamel dating from the First World War period — a poignant keepsake from Britain’s maritime service during the Great War. Crafted in silver and decorated with vivid blue and red enamel, the brooch features a suspended naval badge hung from an enamelled bow. The badge displays the fouled anchor surmounted by the King’s Crown, framed within a laurel wreath and scroll inscribed ROYAL NAVY. Both bow and badge are stamped SILVER on the reverse, confirming quality. Measuring 2.9 cm wide by 4 cm long overall, it remains a fine example of the popular sweetheart jewellery exchanged between servicemen and their loved ones during the Great War.
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches became widespread during the First World War, often given by sailors, soldiers, and airmen to wives, fiancées, and family members as a token of affection and pride. The Royal Navy versions were especially popular, reflecting both Britain’s naval tradition and the personal sacrifices made by those serving at sea. The bow-top style with coloured enamelling was particularly fashionable in the Edwardian and WWI years, making this piece a representative example of wartime sentiment.
*Condition* The brooch is in good overall condition with age-appropriate wear. The enamel retains much of its colour, though there is some loss and surface wear, most evident on the crown. The silver shows tarnish and pitting to the reverse, consistent with age. The pin and hinge remain intact and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
