*British, WWI, Royal Navy HMS Valiant, Sterling Silver & Enamel Sweetheart Brooch, Birmingham 1919, by George Loveridge & Co.*
A charming Royal Navy sweetheart brooch in the form of a fluttering enamel flag, measuring 3.4 cm x 2.3 cm. The front is decorated in deep cobalt blue enamel with gilt detail, featuring a proud cockerel device above a scroll and the ship’s name: H.M.S. Valiant. The reverse is struck with full Birmingham sterling silver hallmarks: maker’s mark G.L for George Loveridge & Co., anchor for Birmingham, the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter “u” for 1919. Fitted with its original pin and clasp to the reverse.
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches were private-purchase items, gifted by servicemen to wives, fiancées, mothers, or sisters as tokens of affection and pride in service. This example relates to HMS Valiant, a Queen Elizabeth–class battleship launched in 1914. She served with distinction at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, the largest naval engagement of the First World War, and remained in service through WWII, participating in Mediterranean operations and the Normandy landings. The date of this piece (1919) suggests it was produced and sold at the end of WWI, when returning sailors were commemorating their ship’s hard service. George Loveridge & Co., who registered their “G.L” mark in July 1904 and used it 1908-1919, were well known for producing quality silver sweetheart and regimental brooches during the war years.
*Condition* The enamel retains good colour and clarity, though with some surface wear and fine scratches consistent with age. Silver reverse shows natural toning and spotting from long storage. Pin and clasp remain intact and functional. A genuine period piece with excellent patina. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
