*British, WWI, Royal Navy HMS Surprise, Gilt and Enamel Sweetheart Brooch*
A gilt-metal Royal Navy sweetheart brooch featuring the crest of HMS Surprise. The design shows a three-masted sailing ship in black enamel within a diamond-shaped gilt shield, surmounted by a Naval Crown, with a black enamel scroll below reading H.M.S. Surprise. It is mounted on a horizontal bar brooch fitting, a classic style popular for sweetheart jewellery of the era.
Dimensions: 5.2cm x 2.5cm
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches were cherished mementoes during both World Wars, bought by sailors or from naval canteens and jewellers, then gifted to wives, mothers or fiancées as tokens of affection and remembrance. HMS Surprise was an Adventure-class scout cruiser launched in 1916 and served during the First World War and into the interwar years, with her name later continued in Royal Navy establishments and training roles. This piece reflects the enduring naval tradition of commemorative jewellery linking families to loved ones serving at sea.
*Condition* The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish, with strong detail to the crest and Naval Crown. The enamel is intact, showing only light age wear. The reverse has surface patination consistent with age, with the pin and clasp mechanism intact and functioning. A fine and well-preserved example of WWII Royal Navy sweetheart jewellery.
