Historical Note: The Royal Flying Corps was formed in 1912 as the air arm of the British Army and played a pivotal role in reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and aerial combat during the Great War. Sweetheart brooches like this example were popular mementoes, gifted to loved ones as a symbol of pride and connection to the serviceman’s branch. In 1918, the RFC merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force.
