A British Pattern 1903 five-pocket leather bandolier, originally manufactured during the First World War and later refurbished and reissued in the immediate post-war period. The bandolier is constructed from blackened leather and fitted with five ammunition pouches, each designed to hold two charger clips of .303 British ammunition, giving a total capacity of fifty rounds. Each pouch is secured by a buttoned flap closure and mounted to a reinforced leather backing strap. The bandolier was intended to be worn diagonally across the chest and retains its leather stabilising loop, which would originally have been secured to the wearer’s waist belt to prevent excessive movement.

This example is clearly stamped both “HGR Ld.” with a partially indistinct WWI-era date beginning “191”, and “Barrow, Hepburn & Gale, London, 1922”, confirming original Great War manufacture followed by post-war inspection or reissue. The blackened finish is consistent with post-war refurbishment and later internal service by the Royal Ulster Constabulary during the 1920s, rather than original pre-1916 brown leather field issue.

Historical Note:
The Pattern 1903 bandolier was standard British infantry equipment throughout the First World War and saw extensive service on the Western Front and in secondary theatres. Designed to carry fifty rounds of .303 ammunition on charger clips, it was intended for rapid reloading and ease of access while worn across the chest.

Following the Armistice, very large quantities of wartime leather equipment were retained in store and subsequently refurbished and reissued for continued service. These were widely used for home defence, training establishments, colonial forces, and internal security roles during the inter-war period.

This bandolier displays two significant manufacturer stamps which clearly illustrate that process. The earlier mark, “HGR Ld.”, denotes Hepburn, Gale & Ross Ltd., a prominent British military leather manufacturer formed in 1903. The adjacent, partially indistinct date beginning “191”  indicates original wartime manufacture between 1914 and 1918, with the final digit weakly struck or later obscured by blackening.

A second stamp reads “Barrow, Hepburn & Gale, London, 1922”, reflecting post-war inspection, refurbishment, or reissue following the 1920 merger which formed Barrow, Hepburn & Gale. The presence of both stamps is entirely consistent with known War Office practice in the early 1920s, when surplus Great War equipment was reconditioned for continued service.

Blackened examples of Pattern 1903 bandoliers are frequently associated with police and internal security use during the inter-war period, including organisations such as the Royal Ulster Constabulary. Such attribution reflects typical service patterns of the period.

*Condition*
The bandolier remains structurally sound and shows clear evidence of genuine service use and age. The leather exhibits expected surface wear, creasing, and aged patina of finish throughout. Stitching and rivets are intact, the brass fittings show an even aged patina, and all five ammunition pouches remain present and complete. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
