A charming Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, cast in the form of a propeller with central RAF wings and crown device. Measuring 7.7 cm wide by 1.2 cm tall, the brooch is silvered metal with red and black enamel details to the crown and “RAF” monogram. The reverse retains its original pin fitting and is stamped with the maker’s mark F.W.C.&S. Ltd.
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches were immensely popular during both World Wars, serving as symbols of loyalty and remembrance. Airmen often presented them to wives, fiancées, mothers or girlfriends as tokens of affection while serving. This example bears the King’s Crown above the RAF monogram, securely dating it to the period before 1953, and most likely to the Second World War years when such items were widely purchased through jewellers and regimental outfitters.
The propeller design was especially popular among RAF personnel, reflecting the central role of aviation in the conflict. The maker, F.W.C.&S. Ltd (Fattorini & Williams, Charles & Sons Ltd), was a recognised British jewellery and insignia manufacturer of the early–mid 20th century, producing a wide range of regimental badges, sweetheart brooches and commemorative items for the armed forces market.
*Condition* The brooch remains in good, displayable condition with expected surface wear and light loss to the silvered finish from age and use. Enamel retains good colour but shows minor rubbing. Pin to reverse is intact and functional. Maker’s mark is clearly stamped. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
