*British, WW2, No 4 Mark II Spike Bayonet & Scabbard, Made by Long Branch Canada*
Approximate measurements: 25cm overall.
Marked on the socket: No 4 MK II, LB, C War Arrow
On the Obverse: Serial no 2025
This socket bayonet was specifically designed for the .303 caliber Lee-Enfield No. 4 rifle, commonly known as the "pig-sticker." These bayonets were extensively used during World War II and remained in service until the 1950s, when they were phased out in favor of the 7.62 mm NATO caliber FN–FAL selective-fire rifle.
The No. 4 Mk. II bayonet was a simplified version of the Mk. I, eliminating the need for milling cuts to create the cruciform blade flutes. Other than that, the bayonet and socket were a single solid forging, identical to the Mk. I.
Three manufacturers produced the No. 4 Mk. II: Singer in Scotland, Savage Stevens Co. in the USA, and Long Branch in Canada. This variant became the most produced, with over 3.3 million units in total.
This example bears the mark of Crown Corporation Small Arms Ltd., Long Branch, Ontario, Canada, identified by the superimposed "L" and "B." Approximately 910,000 No. 4 Mk. II bayonets were produced there between 1942 and 1944. It also features the Canadian Government acceptance mark (a broad arrow within a "C"), denoting Canadian Forces use.
The accompanying No. 4 Mk. 1 scabbard has a tapered steel body with a ball finial and includes a drain hole. It features a round frog stud, brazed to the body.
