*British, WW2, Medal Group of Six inc. Africa Star, Italy Star & named GSM with Malaya Clasp, 4171244 L.A.C. R. A. Churchill, Royal Air Force (RAF), plus Miniatures*

An original mounted group of six medals awarded to 4171244 Leading Aircraftman R. A. Churchill, Royal Air Force, comprising the 1939–1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939–1945, and the General Service Medal 1918–1962 with clasp Malaya, together with a corresponding mounted miniature group.

The group consists of:
- The 1939–1945 Star, bronze six-pointed star with central crowned royal cypher “GR VI” and circlet dated 1939–1945, suspended from the correct dark blue, red and pale blue ribbon.
- The Africa Star, bronze six-pointed example with crowned “GR VI” cypher and circlet “THE AFRICA STAR”, on correct buff ribbon with central red stripe flanked by dark blue and light blue edges.
- The Italy Star, bronze six-pointed example with crowned “GR VI” cypher and circlet “THE ITALY STAR”, suspended from its red, white and green ribbon.
- The Defence Medal, cupro-nickel issue bearing the uncrowned effigy of King George VI, reverse with crowned royal cipher above oak wreath and inscription “THE DEFENCE MEDAL”.
- The War Medal 1939–1945, cupro-nickel issue bearing crowned effigy of King George VI, reverse depicting lion standing over defeated dragon dated 1939–1945.
- The General Service Medal 1918–1962 with clasp MALAYA, silver issue bearing the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, reverse with standing figure of Victory.

The GSM is officially impressed in RAF style: 4171244 L.A.C. R. A. CHURCHILL R.A.F. The naming is neat, evenly spaced, and entirely consistent with official RAF machine-impressed style of the period.

The miniature group mirrors the full-size awards and is mounted court-style. The miniature GSM medal bears a different portrait style to the full-size example, which is normal for privately purchased miniatures, and it correctly carries the Malaya clasp.

Historical Note:
The 1939–1945 Star, Africa Star and Italy Star represent operational service in the Mediterranean theatre during the Second World War. The Defence Medal reflects qualifying non-operational service in areas subject to enemy threat, while the War Medal was awarded for 28 days’ full-time service during the war. The General Service Medal with clasp Malaya confirms service during the Malayan Emergency (1948–1960), a significant post-war counter-insurgency campaign.

The service number 4171244 falls within a post-war RAF enlistment block, typically issued in the immediate post-war period. As a Leading Aircraftman, Churchill would have served in a technical or ground trade capacity within the Royal Air Force.

If taken at face value, the medal combination suggests that Leading Aircraftman R. A. Churchill served in a ground or technical trade with the Royal Air Force in the Mediterranean theatre during the later stages of the Second World War, supporting operations in North Africa and Italy, and later continued service into the post-war period, qualifying for the Malaya clasp during the Emergency of the early 1950s.Further confirmation of full entitlement would require an RAF service record application via the Ministry of Defence.
