*British, WW2, HM Submarine Ursula - Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of WW2 Submarine HMS Ursula. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 23.9cm x 16.8cm (Written in pencil on the back - "Ursula leaving Malta, possibly Upholder foreground")

HMS Ursula was a U-class submarine commissioned in 1938. She served in the North and Mediterranean Seas during World War II, firing the first British submarine torpedoes of the war and engaging enemy ships, including an attack on the German cruiser Leipzig.

Service History
Built by Vickers Armstrong, Ursula joined the 6th Submarine Flotilla and operated in home waters before transferring to the Mediterranean. She sank several enemy vessels, including the German merchant Heddernheim and the Italian auxiliary submarine chaser V 135 / Togo. She also survived depth charge attacks and launched unsuccessful strikes on multiple targets.

Soviet Transfer & Fate
In June 1944, Ursula was loaned to the Soviet Navy, renamed V-4, and continued operations, sinking the German submarine chaser UJ-1219. She was returned to Britain in 1950 and scrapped in May.

Legacy
Ursula’s crew developed the "Ursula suit," a modified Barbour jacket and trousers, which became standard issue for Royal Navy submariners.
