*British, WW1-WWII, Royal Navy Sweetheart Brooch, HMS Revenge, Gilt & Enamel*
A WW1-WWII-period Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Revenge, measuring 5.2cm x 1.8cm. The brooch is of gilt metal with an enamel scroll, mounted to a horizontal bar brooch fitting. The ship’s crest shows a golden lion rampant holding a sword above a red and blue enamel base, with the motto “Loyal Devoir” (Loyal Duty) and the title “H.M.S. Revenge” below. The fastening pin and hinge are intact and functional.
Historical Note:
HMS Revenge (06) was the lead ship of the Revenge-class battleships, launched in 1915. She saw service in the Grand Fleet during the First World War, including the Battle of Jutland in 1916. During the Second World War, she operated primarily in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, performing convoy escort duties and taking part in the Allied landings in Madagascar in 1942. By 1943 she was withdrawn from front-line duties and relegated to training and accommodation, before being scrapped in 1948.
Sweetheart brooches were popular gifts from sailors to their loved ones during wartime, worn proudly on the home front to display family connection to the ship and service. Sweetheart brooches for HMS Revenge are especially sought after, as the ship’s long service career spanned both World Wars, giving them a strong historical resonance.

The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish, with some surface wear and age patination, particularly on the reverse and hinge. The enamel scroll remains bright, with only light rubbing.
