This is a shell carrier from World War 1, used by the British military. Many of these were made by companies such as Dryad Cane Works, Leicester, with thousands ordered at a time by the War Office. Some orders are as follows:

Offered to do 1000 18 pdr Shell B for Vickers & got order for 20 000. (27 Oct. 1914)

250 Howitzers Baskets ordered by the War Office. (30 Jan.–Feb. 1915)

Due to the shape of these carriers, they were likely built to carry the 18 pdr Vicker’s Shell. Most of these carriers did not survive the war as they were often used as fuel for fires once the shells had been spent.

*Condition*

Two of the wooden struts are broken but the carriers remain strong. Carriers are still all connected with no other damage. Please see pictures for more detail.
