*British, WW1, Pattern 1907 Bayonet by Sanderson, Dated July 1915, (no scabbard)*
A British Pattern 1907 bayonet manufactured by Sanderson Brothers & Newbould Ltd., Sheffield, dated July 1915. The blade is 17 inches (43 cm) long with a single edge, rounded point, and long central fuller. The ricasso is stamped with the royal crown over “G.R.” cypher, inspection marks, and “7 ’15” date above the maker’s name Sanderson.
The bayonet retains its standard crossguard with muzzle ring and two-piece wooden grips secured by screw bolts. The pommel incorporates the spring catch release, which remains in place but is stiff. No scabbard is present.
Historical Note:
The Pattern 1907 bayonet was the standard British bayonet of the First World War, designed to fit the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle. Its long blade reflected pre-war emphasis on reach in bayonet fighting, but in trench warfare the 17-inch length often proved cumbersome, leading to later experiments with shortened patterns.
Sanderson Brothers & Newbould Ltd. of Sheffield was among the largest wartime contractors, supplying tens of thousands of bayonets. Mid-1915 examples such as this were issued in vast numbers to the newly raised divisions of Kitchener’s “New Army” as they prepared for deployment to the Western Front.
*Condition*
This example is in poor overall condition. The blade shows heavy pitting, dark corrosion, and finish loss throughout. Markings remain legible, including the royal crown cypher, date, and Sanderson name. The wooden grips are dry, split along the spine, and show surface wear with paint flecks and small losses. The pommel release button is stiff, though still moves with effort. No scabbard included. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
