HMS F2 was built by J. Samuel White at Cowes, laid down on 30 November 1914, and launched on 7 July 1917. She was sold for scrapping in Portsmouth in 1922. F1 and F3 were scrapped earlier, in 1920.
The F-class submarine was designed as a coastal vessel for the Royal Navy, based on the double-hulled V-class submarine (World War I) with only minor modifications. The most significant improvement was the addition of a stern torpedo tube. The class was ordered as a successor to the E-class submarine, but only three of the ten planned boats were completed, with the first, F1, built at Chatham.
During World War I, the F-class submarines were primarily used for coastal defence. All three survived the war and were later repurposed as training boats at Campbelltown.
