*British, WW1, 1907 Pattern Bayonet & Scabbard, by Wilkinson, Dated Nov 1917, Matching Numbers*
An original British Pattern 1907 bayonet by Wilkinson, complete with its matching steel scabbard. The blade is fullered on both sides and remains bright, showing only light patination from age. The ricasso is stamped with the crown inspection mark, “1907” pattern designation, and “11 ’17” release date, together with the maker’s name “WILKINSON.” Additional ordnance and broad arrow inspection marks appear on the reverse ricasso, including later re-inspection dates ’24 and ’25 and the X bend test mark. Both wooden grips are impressed with crown inspection stamps, while the matching rack number “149” is found on the pommel and scabbard throat — confirming it as a complete matched set. The scabbard retains its original finish, with a small “2” stamped to the reverse of the throat.
Approximate Measurements: Blade length: 42.9 cm (16.9 in). Overall length: 55.2 cm (21.7 in)
Historical Note: The Pattern 1907 bayonet was the standard long bayonet issued for the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle, serving throughout the First World War and into the Second. Wilkinson Sword was one of Britain’s foremost military cutlers, supplying large wartime contracts noted for their exceptional finish and reliability. The present example was released from inspection in November 1917, during the later stages of the Great War, and subsequently reissued during the interwar period as indicated by its later inspection stamps. The number “149” represents a rack or armoury number applied after issue to keep bayonet and scabbard paired within a unit’s stores — a rare survival when still matched.
*Condition* This is a very nice example given its age and evident service history, and particularly scarce as a fully matched numbered set. The blade is clean and bright with minor age patination; the hilt and scabbard fittings retain traces of original finish with light oxidation. Grips are sound and well-fitted, showing only light wear and clearly visible crown inspection stamps. The scabbard remains complete and structurally solid, with surface wear and minor scuffing consistent with long service use. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
