*British, WW1, 1907 Pattern Bayonet by Wilkinson, with Original Leather Scabbard, Dated 1916*

A well-marked and desirable example of the Pattern 1907 bayonet, officially known as the Sword bayonet, Pattern 1907 (Mark I). This bayonet was designed for use with the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle and became standard issue for British and Commonwealth forces during both World Wars.

This example is marked on one side of the ricasso with a faded crown cypher over "GR" (Georgius Rex, used from 1910 for King George V in place of ER for Edward Rex), the pattern designation "1907", the month and year of manufacture "6 '16" (June 1916), and the maker "Wilkinson". The reverse ricasso bears the 'X' bend-test mark confirming blade flexibility, a broad arrow government acceptance mark, and multiple Royal Small Arms Factory-appointed inspector’s marks, affirming its military issue.

The Pattern 1907 bayonet was originally designed with a hooked lower quillon intended to trap or deflect an enemy’s bayonet. However, this feature was found to be impractical and was phased out after 1913 in favour of the simpler straight crossguard seen here. Construction features include a one-piece steel blade and tang, crossguard and pommel of wrought iron or mild steel, and wooden grips secured by two screws. The press stud on this example is fully functional, and the wooden grips show honest service wear with typical age cracking.

The blade measures approximately 43 cm, with an overall length of around 55.2 cm. There are some nicks to the edge consistent with field use.

The bayonet is housed in its correct Pattern 1907 leather scabbard, fitted with a steel top-mount and chape, and features a teardrop-shaped frog stud. The scabbard shows a faint broad arrow mark on the rear seam and retains the bayonet securely. The steel fittings have surface oxidation and patina, which is typical and expected for a service-used piece over 100 years old.

*Condition*
Good, service-used condition overall. Blade with edge nicks; grips show wear from age and use; all metal parts with patina, surface rust on the pommel; scabbard with scuffs and honest wear, fittings aged but solid. Press button operates correctly, and scabbard fits well. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
