*British, Victorian, Bust of Dr. David Livingstone, Explorer*

A striking ceramic bust of the famous Scottish explorer and missionary Dr. David Livingstone (1813–1873), standing an impressive 47 cm tall with a base diameter of 13.7 cm. The bust is finely modelled, with a cream-toned face and detailed explorer's attire including a broad-brimmed explorer’s hat, scarf, and patterned waistcoat. The head and clothing have been given a copper-brown glaze effect, contrasting against the pale complexion of the face, creating a dramatic two-tone presentation.

Historical Note:
Dr. Livingstone is remembered as one of the great Victorian explorers, whose travels through Africa during the mid-19th century captured the imagination of the British public. His advocacy against the slave trade, extensive geographical discoveries, and legendary meeting with journalist Henry Morton Stanley (“Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”) cemented his place in history. Victorian and Edwardian homes often displayed busts of statesmen, scientists, and explorers, and this example reflects that tradition. Pieces such as this were likely made as decorative parlour busts, celebrating Livingstone’s enduring legacy.

*Condition*
Overall good condition with minor wear consistent with age. Some very small areas of glaze loss and light chipping are visible on the clothing folds and hat edges, along with natural firing lines beneath the base. The bust remains stable, with no structural cracks, and displays beautifully. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
