A particularly fine and highly desirable example of the 1889 Pattern Royal Naval Cutlass, manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield (EFD) and dated 1901. This example stands out for the remarkable clarity and completeness of its markings, its clean, well-preserved blade, and—notably—the retention of its original regulation scabbard, a feature seldom encountered with surviving Royal Naval cutlasses. Both the cutlass and its scabbard bear matching Royal Navy “N”, Broad Arrow ownership marks, and “EFD” Enfield inspection stamps, conclusively confirming official Admiralty issue.

The straight, single-edged spear-point blade with single fuller measures 71 cm, with an overall length of approximately 85 cm. The blade surface remains notably bright and clean, showing only light, honest service wear, with no heavy corrosion or structural issues. The cutting edge and point remain well-defined, and the fuller is crisp throughout its length, making this an unusually strong example from a condition standpoint.

The heavy steel bowl guard is of the correct 1889 Pattern form, with a robust, turned-over (everted) rim designed to protect the hand and deflect opposing blades during close-quarters combat. The grip and pommel remain tight and solid, with no looseness, reflecting careful use and long-term stability.

Unlike the majority of surviving examples, which are most often found without scabbards, this cutlass retains its original regulation scabbard, correctly marked. In Royal Navy service, cutlasses were typically stored communally aboard ship in racks or buckets rather than issued individually with scabbards. As a result, scabbards were frequently lost or discarded, making complete examples such as this distinctly scarce.

This cutlass is exceptionally well marked throughout, with clear and legible government and inspection stamps present on the blade, hilt, and scabbard:
- Blade ricasso marked with broad arrow, EFD (Enfield), Crown inspection marks, and  ‘01’, indicating continued official service at the turn of the century
- Additional crowned inspection marks present on the blade spine including  ‘00’
- Guard marked with N and broad arrow over EFD, confirming Royal Navy ownership, over Crown inspection marks
- Pommel stamped with rack or issue numbers
- Scabbard throat correctly stamped with N, broad arrow, EFD, and 'C
The consistency and repetition of these markings across all components leave no doubt as to official Royal Navy issue and long service life.

Historical Note:
The 1889 Pattern Royal Naval Cutlass was introduced following the 1887 Admiralty review of naval edged weapons and was designed to replace earlier patterns that had proven less effective in service. Featuring a straight, flat blade and a reinforced bowl guard acting as a “stop rib”, the pattern was optimised for close-quarters fighting and boarding actions.

It was the last true cutlass officially adopted by the Royal Navy, symbolising the end of an era that stretched back centuries. Although increasingly obsolete by the early 20th century, the 1889 Pattern remained in use for training, ceremonial purposes, and emergency issue through the First World War and even into the Second.

Overall very good condition. Blade clean and bright with light service wear only. All markings remain crisp and legible. Guard, grip, and pommel solid with no looseness.
