*British, Sterling Sub-Machine Gun Mk.4 (L2A3), with Sling & 34-rd Magazine, Deactivated*

An attractive, well-preserved Sterling Sub-Machine Gun Mk.4 (British service designation L2A3), deactivated to current EU/UK standard and supplied with the Birmingham Proof House deactivation certificate (No. 188590). The receiver is crisply stamped “STERLING SMG 9m/m Mk.4 (L2A3)” with the correct patent and patent-number panels; the serial KR12685 is present and matches the certificate. Fitted with its original curved 34-round Sterling magazine (marked “MAGAZINE STERLING 9MM 34RDS”), folding side-stock, perforated barrel jacket and a period green webbing sling. Selector is clearly marked S/R/A. Overall the example displays honest service wear to edges and high-touch areas but retains good original finish and all correct Sterling markings.

Historical note:
Adopted in the 1950s to replace the Sten, the Sterling SMG (Mk.4 / L2A3) is one of Britain’s most successful post-war small arms. Noted for its reliable double-stack curved magazine and smooth operation, it served across the Cold War era with British forces, Commonwealth units and numerous export users. The Mk.4/L2A3 examples are prized for their manufacturing quality, identifiable Sterling patents and the number of original accessories (magazines, slings, stocks) that survive.

*Condition*
The rifle is in very good deactivated condition throughout. Receiver markings—including model, patent panels and serial number KR12685—are clear and complete. The finish shows typical light edge wear, minor surface scuffs and small patches of oxidation consistent with careful service use and storage; there are no signs of active corrosion or structural damage. The perforated barrel jacket is straight with only light handling marks. The period green sling is intact and serviceable. The original Sterling 34-round magazine is included and correctly marked; it shows light surface wear and patina but is structurally sound. Deactivation work has been carried out cleanly and professionally and is supported by the accompanying Birmingham Proof House certificate dated 28/05/2025 listing the serial KR12685 and relevant details. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Hard to find British Cold-War Sterling Mk.4 (L2A3) — matching KR12685, original 34-rd magazine, green sling and Birmingham Proof House deactivation certificate. Ready for display or historical collection.
