*British, Special Forces Folding Grappling Hook – Compact 4-Fluke Pattern*

A scarce British Special Forces sapper’s grappling hook of the compact four-fluke pattern, precision-machined in light alloy for strength, durability and corrosion resistance. Designed for portability and rapid deployment, the four hinged arms fold neatly against the central shaft, locking securely when opened to form a four-point anchor. The machining style and alloy composition are consistent with Ministry of Defence manufacture, and traces of the original waterproof grease remain within the hinge housing — a yellow sealing compound characteristic of equipment intended for marine or amphibious use.

This is not a commercial climbing hook but a genuine British MoD-issue compact grapnel, part of the lightweight assault equipment range used in special operations kits by SAS, SBS, and Commando engineers. Compact, functional and easily stowed in a pocket or webbing pouch, the sapper’s grappling hook was an invaluable field tool for line retrieval, trip-wire clearance, scaling obstacles, or recovering stores from difficult terrain. Measuring 15.7 cm in height and 21.5 cm across the flukes when deployed, it combines precision engineering with rugged practicality.

Historical Note:
Light alloy folding grapnels of this type were introduced during the early Cold War era to meet the needs of British and NATO special forces operating in jungle, desert and coastal environments. Their grease-sealed mechanisms ensured reliability even after immersion, making them especially suited to SBS and amphibious assault operations. The compact “sapper’s” pattern remained in service through the 1960s and 1970s, featuring in lightweight assault engineer and demolition kits carried by airborne and special operations units.

*Condition*
In good original condition with light oxidation and patination consistent with service use. The folding mechanism operates smoothly, locking securely in both open and closed positions, and retains traces of the original protective grease. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
