The 1889 Pattern is one of the iconic cutlasses of the Royal Navy.
The blade is marked on one side of the ricasso with the ‘Wilkinson London’ manufacturer’s mark.
The edge of the ricasso is marked with the date ‘00’ and with a factory inspector mark.
The grip is knurled leather and made of two parts connected by five bolts.
This 1889 pattern cutlass has the knurled leather grips associated with the later 1900 pattern navy cutlasses.
~ Dimensions ~
The blade length is 71 cm and the overall length of the piece is 88 cm. Its width is 13 cm.
It weighs 1.3 kg.
~ Condition ~
The blade is in very good condition with a small amount of pitting.
The paint of the basket is chipped and there is some light rust inside.
The grips are in overall good condition with some chips on one side. Please refer to the pictures.
The grips are undamaged.
The scabbard has chips and minor rust to the metal parts and the leather has lost some finish in parts but considering its age, is in good order. Please see the pictures as these form part of our report.
