A full-length three-band Enfield Pattern 1853 style rifle musket, complete with associated socket bayonet. This is a modern reproduction made in the style of the mid-Victorian British service rifle, retaining the correct long rifle-musket profile with brass butt plate, three barrel bands, sling swivels, and Enfield-type lock.
The lockplate is marked ENFIELD beneath a crown, with an additional small crown inspection-style stamp. The stock bears a circular Enfield roundel with crown over numerals and “R ENFIELD,” replicating the inspection marks seen on original service arms. The musket cocks and dry-fires correctly, with the hammer and trigger functioning as intended. The nipple and bolster are present. The barrel shows no visible British proof marks, consistent with a non-service reproduction example.
The accompanying socket bayonet is of the correct Pattern 1853 type, with locking ring and mortice slot. The blade is stamped with a Broad Arrow over WD style ownership mark together with inspection letters, again in the pattern of British War Department markings.
Overall this presents very well as a display or reenactment piece and displays convincingly as a classic Victorian British infantry rifle.
Historical Note:
The Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket was the standard British infantry arm from the mid-1850s and saw widespread service during the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and extensively during the American Civil War, where large numbers were imported by both Union and Confederate forces. Manufactured primarily at the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield and by numerous British contractors, the P53 became one of the most influential military rifles of the 19th century. Its .577 calibre Minié system offered far greater range and accuracy than earlier smoothbore muskets.
Reproduction examples such as this were produced for display, theatrical, and historical reenactment use, and are popular with collectors seeking the classic long Enfield profile without the cost or legal considerations of an original antique service rifle.
