*British RAF Mk.III Emergency Survival Knife, Sheath and Lanyard, 1991*
A Hopkinsons Sheffield-made British RAF Aircrew Mk3 emergency knife, measuring around 20cm in total, served as the standard equipment for aircrew members until it was eventually replaced by the less-favored 'J' cutter tool. This gravity knife boasts a flat profile, featuring a composite handle that houses a spring-lock mechanism, activated by two levers on either side of the hilt. This mechanism securely fastens the knife onto a stud on the sheath, ensuring it stays in place.
The blade is constructed from stainless steel, has a curved design, and spans approximately 10cm in length. The knife is kept within a folded sheet scabbard. It was attached to a cloth patch, sewn onto the flying coverall leg, oriented in an upside-down position. This arrangement allowed the knife to be easily retrieved via a lanyard in situations where the wearer needed to cut rigging lines, such as those on a parachute canopy, during an emergency. It's worth noting that these knives were also used by the SAS.
Marked on the ricasso with a makers trade mark H within a diamond, broad arrow, date mark 91 for 1991, followed by Nato and RAF stores reference 22C/1278106.
