In 1944, the British General Staff issued a specification for a new submachine gun. This was the Sterling SMG and would go on to replace the Sten gun after World War 2. The gun was a successful and reliable design and so it remained as standard issue with the British Army until 1994. This weapon features some interesting features such as the helical grooves cut into the surface of the bolt to remove dirt and fouling from the inside of the receiver to increase reliability. It also has an adjustable rear sight, which can be flipped between 100 and 200 yard settings. The MK4 sterling SMG was adopted in 1956 as the last regular version of the gun in service with the British Army, Royal Marines and RAF.
