*British, Mid-20th Century, Joseph Rodgers Hunting Knife, With Original Sheath*
A handsome mid-20th century hunting knife by the renowned Joseph Rodgers of Sheffield, England—one of the city’s most prestigious cutlers. This example carries the firm’s iconic Star and Maltese Cross trademark, registered in 1764, with JOSEPH RODGERS / SHEFFIELD ENGLAND lightly etched on the blade. The blade measures approx. 13.2cm (5.2 inches), with an overall length of 23.3cm (9.2 inches).
The knife features a clipped point blade with a stacked leather washer handle, flanked by red and black fibre spacers, a brass guard, and a flared aluminium pommel secured with a hex-nut inset. This construction reflects Sheffield design, combining traditional craftsmanship with wartime-influenced materials.
Background: The Joseph Rodgers firm can trace its roots to at least the early 18th century and became one of Sheffield’s largest and best-known cutlers by the Victorian era. The company was appointed cutler to five British monarchs and became globally recognised for its high-quality knives and export-grade hunting and sporting blades. By the mid-20th century, Joseph Rodgers was producing knives both for domestic use and for the export market, especially to North America and the Commonwealth. The design of this knife reflects those dual purposes—blending durability, utility, and visual appeal in a WW2- postwar world where outdoorsmanship and military surplus intertwined.
Sheath: The original tan leather sheath is riveted and stitched in white thread, with a press-stud retention strap bearing the mark NEWEY PAT.201430-22—a British patent design from the 1940s. The sheath has a belt loop, reinforced back, and a leather-lined securing base for the stud, showing quality manufacture.
*Condition* Blade is bright with light sharpening marks and minor age wear; the etched maker’s mark remains visible. The handle is solid with only light surface wear to leather washers; the fibre spacers are undamaged, and the aluminium pommel shows mild tarnish. The brass guard has acquired a light patina. Sheath shows moderate wear consistent with age, with some rust to the rivets and minor scuffing, but the press stud functions properly and the stitching is secure. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
