*British, Mid-19th Century, Double-Barrel Percussion Sporting Shotgun, Damascus Barrels, Gilt Breech Bands, Extensive Engraving*

A very handsome British percussion double-barrel sporting shotgun of mid-19th-century manufacture, featuring extensively engraved locks and furniture, damascus twist steel barrels and well-figured walnut stock. The gun is built in classic Birmingham sporting style, with double external hammers, twin triggers, and a chequered wrist and fore-end.

The damascus barrels show the characteristic twist pattern along their length and retain the correct period round/oval rib form with simple front bead sight. Both breech ends display gilt bands, a quality feature associated with better-grade provincial guns of the 1845–1870 period.

The lockplates, hammers, triggerguard, top-tang, ramrod entry pipe, fore-end iron and side nail escutcheons are richly engraved with foliate scrollwork, sunburst screw surrounds and anthemion or pineapple finials. The original wooden ramrod is present. Overall the gun presents as an unusually decorative example of a sporting double supplied unbranded for the provincial trade, likely Birmingham-made.

Approx. Measurements: Overall length: 112 cm; Barrel length: 72.9 cm

Historical Note:
Percussion sporting shotguns of this type were widely used across Britain from the 1840s to the 1870s, forming the backbone of country shooting before centre-fire cartridges became universal. Birmingham manufacturers such as Hollis, Turner, Bentley & Playfair and others in the St Mary’s and Weaman Street districts produced large numbers of high-quality lockwork and sporting guns either branded, co-branded, or left unmarked for provincial retailers.

The combination of damascus barrels, gilt breech bands and extensive hand engraving seen here places this example firmly within the mid-grade to upper provincial sporting market, reflecting the aspirations of a gentleman shooter who wanted decorative finish.

*Condition*
The gun survives in very good, honest and complete condition, with attractive patination and period character throughout. The lockwork remains functional: both hammers cock and the triggers dry-fire cleanly. The damascus barrels show visible twist pattern with general age toning and scattered surface pitting typical of a percussion sporting piece of this age; muzzles clean, front bead intact.

The walnut stock retains strong figure and colour with numerous handling marks, dents and period wear, particularly around the fore-end and wedge escutcheon. Chequering to wrist and fore-end remains visible. Engraving to hammers, lockplates, tang, triggerguard and other furniture is well preserved. Original ramrod present. No maker’s name visible on rib or plates, consistent with trade-supplied Birmingham manufacture. A 19th-century percussion shotgun of obsolete calibre. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
