*British, Late Victorian c. 1896, 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword, VR Cypher, Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London, Serial No. 34019, with Steel Service Scabbard and Sword Knot, Exceptional*
A very attractive late Victorian Wilkinson infantry officer’s sword bearing the crowned VR cypher of Queen Victoria, with beautifully preserved blade etching and its plated steel service scabbard. With a serial number of 34019, this represents an early example of the 1897 pattern. Victorian examples are relatively scarce, only being produced for four years before the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901.
The blade is richly etched on both sides with exceptionally crisp Wilkinson decoration, including a radiating crown above the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom, the crowned VR royal cypher (Victoria Regina) and finely detailed Victorian foliate scrollwork panels. The blade also incorporates an engraved owner’s monogram panel bearing the initials “H.G.A.M.”, representing the officer who originally purchased the sword — a typical and desirable feature of privately acquired officer’s swords. The quality of the etching is particularly striking, with the decorative panels remaining deep, sharp and highly legible, making this an especially well-preserved example.
The ricasso bears the Prince of Wales feathers with the motto “Ich Dien” (“I Serve”), together with the scroll “By Appointment” and the maker’s address “Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London.” On the obverse the blade further retains its Wilkinson “HW” proof disc, confirming the blade passed the firm’s renowned proving tests prior to sale. These features reflect Wilkinson’s Royal Warrant and reputation as the premier British sword maker of the Victorian period and are hallmarks of a high-quality officer’s private purchase sword.
Serial number 34019 dates the blade to circa 1896, placing it among the earliest Wilkinson examples produced for the newly introduced 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s sword.
The sword is mounted with the classic pierced Gothic guard of the 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s sword, incorporating the crowned VR cypher in openwork form beneath the crown. The hilt retains its fishskin grip bound with twisted wire and the folding inner guard. The sword is accompanied by its plated steel service scabbard with twin suspension rings.
The sword is accompanied by a period British infantry officer’s sword knot with leather strap and woven bullion acorn, a service pattern example consistent with late Victorian field use.
Overall this is a very appealing Wilkinson example, notable for the exceptional preservation of the blade etching and the overall very good condition of the sword.
Approx. Measurements – Blade length: approx. 82 cm. Overall length: approx. 98 cm.
History Note:
The 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword was introduced during the later years of Queen Victoria’s reign and became the standard sword carried by British infantry officers — a pattern that remains in ceremonial use today.
During the late Victorian period swords bore the crowned VR cypher (Victoria Regina) representing Queen Victoria. These swords were carried by officers across the British Army during the final decades of the nineteenth century, a period when the British Empire was at its height.
Henry Wilkinson of Pall Mall was widely regarded as Britain’s premier sword manufacturer. Wilkinson numbered nearly every blade they produced and kept detailed sales ledgers recording the officer who purchased each sword. Serial number 34019 corresponds to the firm’s mid-1890s production, and a search of the surviving Wilkinson ledgers may identify the original officer to whom this sword was supplied.
*Condition* The sword remains in very good condition overall. The blade is bright with exceptionally crisp and well-preserved etched decoration on both sides, including the Royal Arms, VR cypher and Wilkinson maker’s details. Only light areas of age spotting are present consistent with age. The pierced guard remains clean and well preserved, and the fishskin grip with wire binding remains intact. The plated steel scabbard shows light surface wear and minor marks but remains sound and presentable. The knot shows age-related wear and patina consistent with use, with some fraying and deterioration to the leather strap and minor wear to the bullion weave, but remains intact and presentable overall. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
