*British, Late 19th–Early 20th Century – Leather “Leg-of-Mutton” Shotgun Case, Named to J. Fitton*

A classic antique leather leg-of-mutton shotgun case, measuring approximately 79 cm in length, 21.5 cm at its widest point and 8 cm in depth. Constructed in the traditional elongated oval form, the case is made from thick, hard-grafted leather with stitched seams and reinforced ends, lined internally with the remains of deep burgundy wool baize dividers. The exterior carries a period brass nameplate engraved “J. Fitton” in Gothic script—typical of late Victorian to early Edwardian sporting luggage. The case features a stitched leather handle, brass lock (key absent), and a securing strap with buckle.

Historical Note:
Leg-of-mutton cases became a staple of British field sports from the mid-19th century onwards, valued for their compact, discreet profile that followed the outline of a broken-down shotgun. Their rigid leather shells protected the barrels and stock while being far easier to transport in carriages and later motor vehicles. Cases with named plates offer an attractive connection to their original owners—often country sportsmen, estate keepers, or officers who travelled with their guns.

*Condition*
The case is complete with a fantastic patina. It is worn, commensurate with age and service, the leather shows scuffing, scratching, darkened patches and old handling marks. The muzzle-end seam displays loss where the outer leather has perished, exposing packing fibres. The interior baize lining is worn, especially around the lip, with sections missing and frayed. The lock functions but is without key. The securing strap is intact. A genuine, characterful example with attractive patina—ideal for display or restoration. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
