~ History ~
The 20 x 110 Hispano 404 aircraft cannon was used in a wide range of British WW2 and post war aircraft. The HS.404 cannon, initially designed by Hispano-Suiza in the mid-1930s, later versions based on British development are known as 20 mm Hispano. Originating in 1938, it was integrated into French fighter planes with the Hispano-Suiza 12Y engine. Adopted by the Royal Air Force in 1940, it armed various aircraft, including the Bristol Beaufighter and Westland Whirlwind. Initially, its drum feed proved unreliable, prompting modification to a more dependable belt feed. This modified HS.404 saw widespread use in WW2 aircraft, such as the Spitfire, Hurricane, Whirlwind, Beaufighter, Typhoon, and Tempest, and continued in post-war planes like the De Havilland Vampire and Gloster Meteor.
