*British, c.1980s, Robertson’s “Golly Fireman” Enamel Advertising Badge – James Robertson & Sons Ltd*

An original late 20th-century Robertson’s advertising enamel badge depicting the well-known “Golly” mascot dressed as a fireman, produced as a promotional item for James Robertson & Sons Ltd., the long-established British manufacturer of marmalades and jams.

The badge is die-struck and enamelled, showing the character seated with a fire hose and extended nozzle, wearing a bright yellow fireman’s helmet and dark uniform. The design is executed in coloured enamel with gilt metal outlines typical of Robertson’s promotional badges produced during the later 20th century.

The reverse is impressed with the maker’s mark:

“© James Robertson & Sons Ltd.”

and retains its original vertical brooch pin fitting with safety roller catch, still functioning correctly.

This example represents the “long hose nozzle” fireman variant, one of several different Robertson’s Golly character badges produced in the 1970s–1980s promotional series.

Approx. Measurements – Height: 3.2 cm. Width: 1.8 cm.

History Note:
The Golly mascot was used by James Robertson & Sons Ltd. from 1910 onward as a promotional figure associated with their marmalade and jam products. By the later 20th century the character appeared on a wide variety of advertising material including enamel badges, brooches, and promotional giveaways.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Robertson’s issued numerous character-themed badges showing the mascot in different occupations or roles, including fireman, drummer, chef, and other novelty designs. These enamel badges were widely distributed as promotional items and later became collectible examples of British advertising memorabilia.
