*British, c.1950s–60s, Queen Elizabeth II Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, With Original Box & Spare Ribbon - R. J. IFOULD, M956587H*
A Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal issued in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, complete with its original printed Royal Mint-style box and the separate issue envelope for the spare ribbon (marked “E.R.”). The medal remains on its original mounted ribbon with brooch pin, showing an attractive deep blue and white riband consistent with naval awards of the period. The medal displays the young laureate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, with the reverse carrying the classic three-masted ship design encircled by a rope border and the legend FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT.
The rim is officially impressed to M956587H R. J. IFOULD OEA1 HMS CENTURION, confirming issue to an Ordinary Electrical Artificer First Class serving aboard HMS Centurion, the Royal Navy’s long-standing parent and administrative depot ship (later the Fleet Maintenance Base at Portsmouth). The ribbon-mounted clasp is complete and the spare, unused ribbon remains in its original paper wrapper.
The box of issue bears the printed crown device to the lid and retains the recipient’s name handwritten to the side panel, matching the medal’s naming.
Historical Note HMS Centurion served in various roles throughout the 20th century, most significantly as the Royal Navy’s pay, accounting and administrative hub after WWII. Personnel formally “borne” on Centurion’s books included specialists working in dockyard, depot, and fleet support roles—often experienced senior ratings whose long and exemplary service qualified them for the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Under Elizabeth II, the medal required fifteen years’ continuous, irreproachable service, and named examples with complete boxes and ribbons are increasingly sought after.
*Condition* The medal shows pleasing, honest toning consistent with silver of the period, with crisp rim naming and sharply struck detail to both obverse and reverse. Ribbon remains clean and bright, with minor age fray at the mount. The spare ribbon is unused and retains its original fold lines inside the “E.R.” envelope. The box is intact with light surface handling wear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
