*British, c.1930s–40s, Military Swagger Stick, Ball-Top*
A smart and authentic British military swagger stick, c.1930s–40s, with nickel ball top – a fine parade ground piece at 68.5 cm. With a polished nickel-plated ball top and ferrule, mounted on a black-painted wooden shaft. The shaft retains much of its original finish, with age-appropriate scuffs and wear from service use. The ball finial is simple and unadorned, giving this example a smart, understated military appearance.
Historical Note: Swagger sticks were an established part of British and Commonwealth military dress during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Officers, NCOs, and some specialist troops carried them as symbols of authority and discipline rather than as walking aids. By the interwar years and through WWII, privately purchased examples such as this one were common for parade, barracks duty, or walking-out dress. While many bore regimental crests or silver mounts, plainer models like this were equally correct and popular, reflecting a no-nonsense professional style. By the 1950s swagger sticks gradually fell out of widespread military use, though they remain iconic symbols of the parade ground.
*Condition* In good, honest condition with expected signs of service use. The nickel-plated ball top retains a bright finish with areas of tarnish, spotting, and surface wear. Shaft retains the majority of its original black paint, with small chips and abrasions consistent with age. Ferrule shows wear and patina but remains intact and secure. A solid example of a period military swagger stick. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
