*British, c.1835–1860, Percussion Double-Barrel Shotgun by William Pether of Oxford, Damascus Barrels, Deactivated*
A Victorian percussion double-barrel shotgun with 72.5 cm (28½ in) Damascus twist barrels signed on the rib “Pether, Oxford” and an overall length of 115 cm (45¼ in). The locks, hammers, and furniture are engraved with fine scrolling foliate decoration. Walnut half-stock with chequered grip and fore-end, and steel butt-plate. An oval silver escutcheon is inset behind the top tang, finely engraved with an intertwined monogram (possibly C&H ✝) and dated “June 23 1870.”
The rib inscription corresponds to William Pether of St. Aldate’s, Oxford, who is recorded in the 1834 and 1841 electoral rolls as a gunmaker, having been apprenticed to William Dupe and admitted free of the city in 1827. Pether is known to have produced sporting guns and pistols during the percussion era, his work occasionally encountered at auction.
Historical Note:
William Pether represents one of the better-documented provincial Oxford gunmakers of the mid-19th century. His name appears in trade directories and poll books from the 1830s through the 1840s, establishing him at premises in St. Aldate’s. The use of finely patterned Damascus barrels, percussion locks, and decorative engraving is typical of quality English sporting guns of this period.
The silver cartouche dated 23 June 1870 is almost certainly a later ownership or presentation inscription, rather than the date of manufacture, as the percussion system had by then largely given way to breech-loading cartridge guns. Such dated ovals were commonly engraved to mark personal milestones, gifts, or presentation pieces, and add to the individual story of the gun.
*Condition*
The shotgun remains in sound but unrestored condition, with an even brown patina overall. The Damascus twist pattern is visible but softened, with scattered pitting and wear to the barrel surfaces. Engraving on the locks and tang is present though rubbed in places. One hammer shows damage to the spur (partially broken). The walnut stock displays a pleasing dark patina with chequering still visible, though showing wear and flattening in areas. Light scratches, handling marks, and compression consistent with age are present, together with a small shrinkage gap at the fore-end iron. The butt-plate and furniture show oxidation and age-related wear. The bores show surface corrosion. Mechanically the action holds on half and full cock but has not been tested. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
