*British, c.1795–1810, Royal Navy Officer’s “Five-Ball” Spadroon with Original Tooled Leather Scabbard – Trafalgar Period*

A fine and complete Royal Navy officer’s spadroon dating from the Napoleonic Wars and Trafalgar era, circa 1795–1810. This elegant sword is of the classic “five-ball” type, a favoured pattern among British naval officers during Nelson’s command years.

The brass hilt is of regulation naval form, featuring a flat D-guard terminating in a quillon scroll, with five domed knops (“balls”) to the crossbar and a broad knucklebow rising to a domed pommel with button finial. The grip is beautifully constructed with alternating fluted panels of polished bone and dark ebonised spacers, all intact and showing fine age toning. The overall finish retains a rich, unpolished golden patina.

The single-fullered curved blade, approximately 63 cm long (77 cm overall), shows light service wear and even grey patina, with remnants of earlier etching and inspection marks near the forte—typical of late-Georgian blades supplied by London cutlers such as Osborn, Wooley, or Prosser. The edge remains true and undamaged.

The original scabbard accompanies the sword—an extremely scarce survival. It is of black leather, hand-tooled with characteristic naval cross-hatch and chevron motifs, fitted with its brass throat bearing frog button and a heart-profiled chape engraved with twin lines.

Measurements: Overall length: 77 cm. Blade length: 63 cm. Blade width at forte: 2.9 cm

Historical Note:
This distinctive five-ball spadroon was widely carried by officers of the Royal Navy between about 1790 and 1810, spanning the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and the Battle of Trafalgar (1805). Period portraits and surviving examples in the National Maritime Museum and Royal Armouries confirm its close association with sea officers of Nelson’s fleet. The combination of brass hilt, lightly curved blade, and tooled leather scabbard represents the quintessential naval officer’s sidearm of the Trafalgar generation.
