This scarce bayonet with its matching scabbard is in excellent condition for its 134 years! Knife bayonet for use with the .303 caliber M1888 Lee-Metford and Long Lee-Enfield rifles. Mk. I 2nd Type with grips secured by two large rivets and cleaning hole in the grip.
The 300mm double-edged blade is crisply marked with a flat crown above VR (Victoria Regina) and the production date July 1890. The obverse ricasso is marked with the Enfield inspection mark indicating it was made was produced at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield (RSAF Enfield), the British War Department War Arrow and "WD" and a bend test mark. The blade spine also bears Enfield inspection stamps. The pommel is marked with in-facing broad arrows with a “C” on either side, meaning sold out of service, the same mark is faintly discernable on the back of the leather scabbard. The obverse pommel is marked 3 WK which may refer to the The Royal Warwickshire Regiment who used the designation WK after 1881.
The bayonet is complete with its Enfield made black leather scabbard with steel mounts. The steel locket and chape are stamped with Enfield inspection marks and the throat bears the matching rack number 507.
*Condition*
It is very rare to find an 1888 Pattern bayonet with a matching scabbard in such excellent condition as this. The markings are crisp, the button works well, the scabbard fits securely and both scabbard and bayonet are in very good condition with minor dings and marks commensurate with age and service.
