*British Army, 1960-62, BSA (UB) L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), 7.62mm, Old Specification Deactivation, with Bayonet & Sling*
A British Army L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) in 7.62mm NATO, deactivated to old specification and presented with a correct British pattern web sling and bayonet with scabbard. The rifle retains its correct wooden furniture and measures approximately 112 cm overall. It represents a typical long-service British Army SLR, displaying the expected combination of original manufacture markings and later inspection and component acceptance stamps.
The left-hand side of the receiver is marked “Rifle 7.62mm L1A1 UB60 A90260”, with a further marking “UB62 A148778”, reflecting continued inspection or factory-level attention during service. Safety positions are clearly marked “S” and “R”, and Broad Arrow government ownership marks are present throughout, including on the trigger, rear sight assembly, furniture, and fittings.
British L1A1 rifles employed a U-prefix serial number system to identify the manufacturer and year of production: UB – Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA); UE – Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield; UF – Royal Ordnance Factory, Fazakerley. Accordingly, a marking such as “UB60” denotes a rifle manufactured by BSA in 1960. This system is well documented and consistent with museum-held and service-recorded examples.
This rifle is accompanied by an L1A3 bayonet and scabbard, introduced as an improved pattern during the later service life of the L1A1 rifle. Blade length: approx. 19.5 cm. Overall length: approx. 29.5 cm

Historical Note:
The L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle served as the standard rifle of the British Army from 1957 to 1985. Derived from the Belgian FN FAL design by Dieudonné Saive, it was adopted following NATO standardisation on the 7.62mm NATO cartridge. Renowned for its reliability and accuracy, the L1A1 saw extensive service throughout the Cold War, including Northern Ireland and overseas deployments. Issued from 1960 onward, this L1A1 could have served in numerous British Cold War deployments. Rifles from this period saw use during the Malayan Emergency (1957–1960), Confrontation in Borneo (1962–1966), Aden Emergency (1963–1967), extensive deployment in Northern Ireland (1969–1990s), and later in the Falklands War (1982).
*Condition*
The rifle is in very good display condition. The wooden stock and handguards show honest service wear and handling marks consistent with military use, with no cracks or structural damage. Metal surfaces retain a consistent service finish with expected edge wear and contact marks. All markings remain clear and legible. The bayonet and scabbard show typical service wear. Deactivated to old specification, with accompanying Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House Deactivation Certificate, dated 6 April 1994, certifying the rifle as incapable of discharging any missile and recording it as BSA manufacture, in accordance with UK legislation at the time of deactivation.
