HMS Sovereign, a Swiftsure-class nuclear-powered submarine, was launched on 17 February 1973 and commissioned on 11 July 1974.

In 1976, she participated in Operation Brisk, surfacing near the North Pole to test navigation and equipment in extreme conditions, in coordination with the Canadian Forces.

She underwent a major refit in the mid-1990s but faced tail shaft cracks during sea trials, requiring emergency repairs in 1998. Sovereign supported the "Perisher" Submarine Command Course in 1999 and joined NATO’s Linked Seas exercise in 2000.

Recurring reactor issues side-lined her in the early 2000s, but she returned to full service by 2005 before decommissioning in September 2006.
