HMS Courageous (S50), a Churchill-class nuclear fleet submarine, served in the Royal Navy from 1971 until decommissioning in 1992. She now operates as a museum ship under the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre.
In 1982, Courageous was deployed alongside HMS Conqueror in the Falklands War but returned undamaged. After retirement, she was chosen to represent the Royal Navy’s Cold War nuclear submarine fleet. Components from HMS Valiant were used in her restoration.
In 2021, the National Museum of the Royal Navy began developing a Cold War Centre around Courageous. Plans were also made to relocate her from her berth at HMNB Devonport due to site redevelopment.
