*British, 1963, Royal Navy Lieutenant-Commander’s Service Dress Jacket & Trousers by Gieves Ltd, Named to J. Goldsmith, Portsmouth*

Royal Navy officer’s dark blue service dress jacket and trousers, tailored by Gieves Ltd, London, dated 14 February 1963, named to J. Goldsmith, Portsmouth, and retaining original medal ribbon bar.

The jacket is the regulation double-breasted naval pattern with eight gilt fouled-anchor buttons to the front and cuff rank lace for Lieutenant-Commander, consisting of two gold stripes with an intermediate stripe and executive curl, confirming a senior commissioned officer of the Royal Navy. Medal ribbons are mounted above the left breast pocket, including General Service and campaign awards, indicating active service during the post-war period.

The trousers are matching dark blue naval pattern with button waist and zip fly, both garments bearing matching laundry marking G-9579, likely a shipboard or naval laundry reference number confirming the two pieces were worn together.

Both jacket and trousers retain original Gieves Ltd, London labels with Portsmouth fitting reference.

Approx. Measurements – Jacket – Shoulder width: 45 cm. Sleeve: 63 cm. Trousers – Waist: 43 cm x 2. Leg length (zip seam): 45 cm.

Historical Note:
Royal Navy officers were required to obtain uniforms privately from approved naval tailors, the most prestigious being Gieves Ltd of London and Portsmouth, long established as official naval outfitters by appointment to the Royal Household.

This uniform is dated 14-2-63, placing it in the early Cold War period when Royal Navy officers continued to wear the traditional double-breasted service dress introduced before the Second World War.

The name J. Goldsmith, Portsmouth corresponds with other uniforms of the same officer dated 1942, 1953, and 1963, showing a long naval career spanning the Second World War and post-war service. The medal ribbon bar indicates entitlement to Second World War campaign awards, the Naval General Service Medal, post-war operational campaign service, the 1953 Coronation Medal, and the Naval Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, confirming a long-serving Royal Navy officer whose career spanned the Second World War and the Cold War period.

Matching laundry mark G-9579 on both garments further supports issue and use as a set, likely worn aboard ship.
