*British, WW2-1945, Africa Star Campaign Medal, Original Ribbon*
An original Second World War Africa Star campaign medal, issued to British and Commonwealth forces for service in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943. The six-pointed bronze star is suspended from its correct original ribbon, which features red (representing the British Army), flanked by pale blue (RAF) and navy blue (Royal Navy) stripes on a yellow background, symbolising the desert sands.
The obverse bears the Royal Cypher "GRI VI" beneath a crown, surrounded by the inscription "The Africa Star". The reverse is plain, as issued. This example shows an attractive aged patina and retains its full-length original ribbon, though there is light fraying to the upper edge.
The Africa Star was instituted in 1943 to recognise operational service in the North African campaign during World War II. It was awarded for at least one day's service in specified operational areas, including Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria. The medal acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Eighth Army, the Desert Air Force, and naval forces in pushing Axis forces out of Africa. Clasps were awarded for special distinctions, including "8th Army" and "1st Army", though none are present on this example.
