*British, 1937, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Coronation Commemorative Medal*
A British commemorative coronation medal issued to celebrate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, which took place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937.
The obverse shows a crowned bust of King George VI facing left, with the surrounding legend “GEORGE VI & QUEEN ELIZABETH.” The portrait is rendered in relief with traces of the original gilt finish still visible in the recessed areas. The reverse depicts Britannia standing beneath an architectural arch, holding aloft a crown and carrying a sceptre. The surrounding inscription reads “CROWNED * A.D. 1937.” This symbolic imagery reflects the continuity of the British monarchy following the constitutional crisis of 1936.
The medal is fitted with a small suspension loop, suggesting it may originally have been worn on a ribbon or attached to a commemorative brooch mount. These medalettes were widely distributed as public souvenirs of the coronation celebrations across Britain and the Empire.
Approx. Measurements – Diameter: 3.2 cm.
History Note:
The coronation of King George VI took place on 12 May 1937 after the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, in December 1936. Edward VIII had originally planned to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American, which created a constitutional crisis that forced his abdication. As a result, the scheduled coronation ceremony proceeded on the same date but for the new monarch, George VI, and his consort Queen Elizabeth (later known as the Queen Mother).
Across Britain, a wide range of commemorative items were produced to mark the occasion. These included medals, badges, mugs, and souvenirs distributed at civic events, street celebrations, and school ceremonies. Many local authorities and organisations issued similar medalettes to children or participants in coronation festivities. While not official state awards, these pieces represent an important part of the material culture of the coronation celebrations and reflect the public enthusiasm surrounding the new monarch after the uncertainty of the abdication crisis.
