Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee fleet review in 1897
By 1897, the Royal Navy had dominated the seas for nearly a century, unmatched in size and power. During Queen Victoria’s reign, sixteen naval reviews were held—more than under any other British monarch—providing frequent displays of naval strength. A total of 165 naval vessels, including 21 battleships, were reviewed by the Prince of Wales aboard HMY Victoria and Albert (1855), standing in for Queen Victoria, who was too unwell to attend. Merchant ships and foreign warships also participated, adding to the grandeur of the occasion.
